I’m Gregory, a registered psychologist based in Calgary – here to guide you through life challenges. I am originally from South Africa, and was registered there as a counselling psychologist from 2016, before moving to Calgary in December 2018.
I completed a master of arts degree in community-based counselling psychology, providing me with extensive knowledge in the fields of psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and community psychology, and psychopathology. I completed my degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg – one of the top universities on the continent. I continued my training during my internship year at the Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development at the University of Johannesburg, where I was fortunate to work amongst psychologists from a wide variety of training backgrounds.
The result of an my intensive years of training is that I am now well equipped to work with a wide variety of . While many psychologists have chosen to specialize in specific types of therapeutic work, my chosen specialty has emerged as “psychotherapy” as a whole. I believe strongly in addressing the individual as a whole. While diagnoses and their treatment approaches are wonderful tools that I am happy to work with, every person is far more than the sum of their labels. Successful psychotherapy requires an in-depth understanding of as much of the individual as possible, and that is what I strive to work with.
Before registering as a counselling psychologist, I spent some years working in Japan and Korea. I gained valuable life experience in the forms of both meeting people from around the world, and working in schools amongst people from vastly different cultural backgrounds to my own. This experience fostered an intense curiosity for the variations in individuality, from cultural and religious backgrounds to moral inclinations and future aspirations. Practicing in psychology affords me the opportunity to continue that exploration, while offering the privilege of being of help to people in achieving their imagined futures.
I’m also an out and proud bisexual man, in a relationship with a same-sex partner for the last 9 years. My own experiences as a bisexual man, and the stories I was exposed to through friends and my communities, led me to focusing my graduate studies research in the same area. I have continued to seek education on the unique issues facing members of the LGBTQ+ community throughout my career, and I hope to use my experience and knowledge to help you!
